Department of Histology and Embryology
Histology
and Embryology are the basic disciplines of Veterinary Medicine education. The
Department of Histology and Embryology has been continuing its education
activities since the 2011-2012 academic year, when our faculty started
undergraduate education.
Our
department offers the courses Medical Biology, Embryology, Histology-I, and
Histology-II to first- and second-year undergraduate students. Students
who succeed in these foundational courses gain proficiency in the prenatal
development processes of various animal species, as well as in the basic
biological characteristics and microscopic structures of cells and organisms.
In
Histology courses, students are theoretically taught the structural and
functional features of healthy cells, tissues, and organs in mammalian and
avian species, along with the relationships between these structures. Based on
the knowledge gained from theoretical lessons, students are trained in our
microscopy laboratory to recognize animal cells, tissues, and organs at the
light microscopic level through various techniques and skills. Embryology
courses cover the formation, development, and differentiation of cells,
tissues, and organs in mammalian and avian species, starting from
fertilization, through both theoretical and practical lessons. Additionally,
our department provides theoretical and practical training for senior intern
students to support their clinical knowledge and methods for analyzing meat and
meat products.
Faculty
members of our department also contribute to the educational activities of
various undergraduate and graduate courses within the Faculty of Health
Sciences and the MSc program in Medical Histology and Embryology at the
Institute of Health Sciences.
In addition to education activities, research activities are also carried out within the department. Our Histology Research Laboratories are equipped with various tools used for the preparation of cell, tissue, and organ samples, sectioning, staining, microscopic examination, and analysis. Techniques such as immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, routine histochemistry, and histological staining are employed during scientific research and educational activities. These routine histological staining methods enhance the reliability of cellular and tissue data obtained from interdisciplinary research.
Our department currently continues its educational, instructional, and research activities with two academic staff members.
